About Mezala
Who we are
An Egyptian non-profit organization registered in the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity with No. 8669 since April 2012, under the Law 84 of 2002 amended by Law 149 of 2019.
It was established by Al-Darb Al-Ahmar Community Development Company, which is affiliated to Aga Khan Cultural Services– Egypt Company, with the main goal of creating a significant development acts within the Al-Darb Al-Ahmar area in broad developmental aspects, including but not limited to (Economic, Social, and Local Crafts).
The Foundation aims primarily at building people and their capabilities, in addition to building development projects to achieve sustainability and community development for the people of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar and Cairo inhabitants in general in all economic and social aspects.
The Foundation operates in several social fields, namely:
- Economic development to increase household income
- Cultural, Scientific and Heritage related services
- Establishing vocational training centers and exhibitions
- Develop project for artisans training and capacity building
The accumulated experiences gained by the Foundation over the years and its projects contributed to the community development, a positive impact materialized in Al Darb Al Ahmar area. Due to the foundation professional and capable team dealing with all development aspects, and its professional reputation, it is qualified to be one of the main active foundations in Egypt.

A reliable NGO acting as a vehicle for the sustainable promotion of community and civil society participation, aiming to work hand in hand with the people themselves in all development aspects and to achieve sustainable improvements in the social, economic and physical quality of life of the marginalized people.

Ethics & Values
Respect, transparency, efficiency, commitment, and collaboration, in addition to a great focus on the cross cutting themes such as; the Gender Equality, Child Protection, Environment Protection, and Active Citizenship Engagement.
Main Goal
To build up on the existing interventions and to initiate new ones aiming to bring long lasting improvements in the physical, socio-economic statuses and living conditions of the marginalized people.
Mezala long-term goals
- Enhancing livelihood and quality of life for the people of the local area, especially women and marginalized ones through real development processes in the economic and social aspects through the implementation of the fundamentals for sustainable development.
- Building human capabilities in order to restore self-confidence and enhance the ability to innovation through actual development processes in both economic and social fields.
- Ensure the institutional sustainability in terms of preserving and developing its assets and resources.
Mezala short-term goals
- Building on all previous experience of both Al-Darb Al-Ahmar Community Development Company, and the Al-Darb Al-Ahmar Revitalization Project, and collecting databases to benefit from them in future acts.
- Initiating new projects in order to start working in parallel with the existing ones, and forming new teams supported by Aga Khan Cultural Services-Egypt company.
Development Programs
Mezala has been established since April 2012, pursuing its projects and activities through four main programs:
- Economic development program
- Social development program
- Environmental preservation program
- Urban development program
Mezala Activities
- Reviving and preserving the traditional crafts famous for in the Historic Cairo area by encouraging the residents of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar and the action area of Cairo Governorate to practice them passing high-quality training, providing them with modern designs, and displaying their products in the permanent exhibitions of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar Community Development Company inside Al-Azhar Park.
- Qualifying the local youth to join the labor market by establishing and operating a vocational training center and empowered by: lecture halls equipped with the latest audio-visual technologies, computer labs, as well as proper craft training halls.
- Marketing and promotion of handicraft products through the permanent exhibitions inside Al-Azhar Park, as well as participating in annual exhibitions held in the national conference hall, such as (La Casa – Windworks – Vernex – Le Marche – Torathouna).
- Branding for (Harf Khan) to market the distinguished production of artisans’ workshops, whether locally or internationally, and by e-marketing through the Internet.
- Raising awareness of local handicrafts value by conducting seminars, lectures, and cultural workshops.
